From elitist suburb to cross-track slum, Southwest Dallas has experienced several iterations. Even after it was annexed in 1903 Oak Cliff continued to have a personality of its own. By the 1980's it was an eclectic neighborhood on the edge of rebirth. Former palatial residences were sectioned into apartments which housed a diverse mix of young families and struggling singles who took pride in the community's eccentricities. At its center was a beauty salon called Oline's, pumping the life blood of laughter, gossip, and solace through it all.

Hedley, Shamrock, and Port Aransas were the settings of my childhood summers. They all look a different version of themselves now. These are the stories we retell.

They were the first indication that the traveler was reaching a new spot on the map. Grain Mills (or bb factories) were the commercial hubs of the rural South. They appeared through back seat windows like metallic alien structures on abandoned railway tracks.

My yearly affair with Peru has rekindled an appreciation for the lines and colors of Latin America. This was a celebration for the Virgin del Carmen in a small mountain town of the Cuzco region. Incan spirituality and Catholic theology make an intoxicating cocktail.
